Miraculous rescue with a very happy ending!

Juana's Special Sunday/Monday Report ...      Edited and posted by Bill

For an entire year a group of employees from The Dallas Morning News have been feeding a stray dog

Several months ago, Sally Hoover, one of our Saturday Adoption Day Volunteers, called our shelter asking if we could take in one more stray doggie. Back then we really didn't have a space available, and we can't say that we do now, but knowing how hard it is to place rescued dogs, we said we would try to help them as much as we could. Once again we decided we would find a way to squeeze in just one more rescue somehow. The story started out with Sally and several employees from The Dallas Morning News, all animal enthusiasts, seeing a stray doggie in need. This group of caring people from the newspaper were feeding this dog everyday, but none of them could get close enough to the dog to catch her. They kept on hoping that eventually they would catch the dog and get her to a safe place. Of course, a no kill shelter would be their first choice. The weeks and months passed and passed, and this doggie wouldn't surrender herself to this group trying to rescue her. All of these employees somehow managed to continue feeding the poor stray in the parking lot for almost 13 months. And the dog knew to come and eat, but if they tried to touch her, she would run from them.

A local dog whisperer agreed to come and catch the dog

An employee from the paper called me last Wednesday or Thursday asking if we still had a space available for this dog if they could catch her this weekend. The very caring woman said that they had been told to stop feeding the stray, and they just didn't know what to do.  She said, "We really need your help. If we catch this dog, can you take her? We will help with expenses, ... please." After talking with her, I just couldn't believe that this same dog was still alive. It had been a little over a year now since they started to feed the stray. She was still coming to eat, but she still wouldn't let them touch her. That was really something. It was like a sign to me that it was meant to be. I said, "Okay, we will make room one way or another." The DMN employee was very happy to hear this.

I asked the woman how they were planning to catch the dog now after almost a year of trying with no luck. She said she had contacted a local dog whisperer and he has agreed to come and catch the dog for for them. He wanted to make sure, however, before he would come and rescue the dog, that they had made arrangements for somebody to take this dog and give her sanctuary. She said that now that we have agreed to take in the dog, the dog whisperer would come this weekend. I gave the woman my son Roberto's cell phone number because we were planning to attend Petsmart's Santa photo sessions and adoption events on both Saturday and Sunday this weekend. I told the woman that we would bring an extra crate and if they did catch this baby to just bring her to Petsmart Sunday and we would take care of the rescued dog. We were all set up for this new rescue now.

Chris from the DMN to bring the dog to us at Petsmart

Sure enough, on Sunday Roberto received a phone called from the man who'd helped rescue this doggie! Roberto called me saying that they were on their way with the dog to Petsmart. I thought, "Okay, now we have another doggie to take care for." Erin was there to meet Chris, who works for The Dallas Morning News, and she has the details of exactly what happened. Erin called me to let me know that she had the dog and they were on their way back to the shelter.

Chris from the DMN and Adoption Day Volunteer Jeff carry the rescued dog into Petsmart.

Jeff helps the beautiful black doggie out of the crate she's been in all night.

Petsmart Trainer Evelyn helps us talk with the scared dog.
