Let's Go Camping!

For the event team this past weekend was a very special time spent in a beautiful space inside the ExploreUSA RV booth at Dallas Market Hall

There were no campfires or lakes at the RV Show, but we still managed to share great conversation and put a smile on a lot of people's faces when they got to step away from their busy shopping and sneak a hug and a pet with one of our rescues.

Thursday

We set up "camp" at the beautiful large space ExploreUSA provided for us in the middle of the path of several other RV exhibitors.

Friday

By the time the show opened Friday morning, we were poised for high visibility complete with a tower of red, white and blue balloons. Our background was a Heartland Big Country 5th wheel RV, and to the side we had a fancy Elite Suites 5th wheeler as well. These are serious RVs. The sales slogan circulated "With every RV sold came a rescue dog."

The Straydog campers for Friday included Natasha and Rosco. Both of these doggies have a wonderful disposition and of course Rosco had to show that he was still a puppy. His beautiful caramel color and precious white painted paws, true signs of a boxer, had visitors touched with wondering what his other mix was. Natasha who wears a beautiful black coat with touches of brown over both eyebrows and on the inside of her pointed ears, also kept everyone guessing if she was a Sheltie, husky, or a cattle dog mix. Either one of these pups would make a great pet for a family and would be loved no matter what the mi were. And I bet they would like being outdoors camping as well.

Saturday

Saturday was a very busy day, and we were very appreciative that our volunteer's. Lana W and Donna B joined us early in the morning. Todd was also available to help walk the dogs about the visitors and do outdoor bathroom breaks. Thank you everyone! The lucky doggies on Saturday included Mike and Scoobie. You may remember Mike as one of our newer rescues. He is a beautiful yellow lab about 2 years old. He was very hesitant and shy when he first got to the show, but within an hour, which included a lot of fuss over how beautiful he was along with hugs and rubs and pets, he warmed up to be a show stopper. Scoobie, who is the last of Belle's pups still to be adopted, stands very tall and proud on his long legs. About 10-months-old Scoobie loves attention and play time. There was a game of catch at the show, and Scoobie won out. Of course being a puppy Scoobie was the first to punch one of the balloons and make a popping noise. He immediately decided he didn't want to have anything to do with that. At the end of a long day we had provided several individuals with adoption applications, and hopefully both of these doggies will find a forever home. I know that Donna, Lana, Todd, David, Tom and myself were glad when Saturday finally came to an end at 8 pm.

The third day of a show always seems to come much too early, but knowing that Tuffy would be there along with Terry Dog kept us motivated. Tuffy is an experienced show stopper and knows that when he doesn't get attention all he has to do is let out a deep bark of his and the crowds come running. Terry Dog exhibits her soft nature showing off her beautiful reddish coat that David spent time brushing prior to the show. Jeff H shared his Sunday with us and helped to make sure all the visitors who wanted an opportunity to pet Tuffy or Terry got to do so. Todd came mid day and helped us finish up the day while walking the dogs. A big thank you to Jeff and Todd.

Talking with folks about our Straydog mission

One of our focuses at these special events is to share with the public the Straydog mission. It is always fun when we get to visit with existing supporters and families that have adopted doggies from Straydog. When these wonderful people are at our booth they are always willing to express to other visitors what a wonderful place Straydog is and how much their dog has enriched their lives.

Spay/Neuter

We also spend time making sure people are aware of the importance of spay and neuter and assisting them in locating a reduced cost provider if necessary.

Adoption

And one of the most important things we do is talk about adoption. Not only do we take doggies to show, we refer visitors to our website and answer questions regarding our adoption process. Recently we have added an "Adoption Card" spinning rack to our booth and it creates a lot of interest as interested families review the pictures of the many dogs in need of loving homes. Hopefully in the near future we will be able to add a digital display as well.

During the RV show as it is commonly called we have already or are in the process of receiving over 5 applications and not all are on the dogs that were at the show.

Thanks!

We want to extend a very special thank you to all of our volunteers and to all of the people at ExploreUSA who make us feel like part of their family. Their warm hospitality and visits as well as introductions to other vendors and potential buyers make us feel very special. Thank you all. ... Linda
